General Expectations & Ring Terminology

Ring Membership Expectations

  • You must submit the URL where you will also be placing the code
Don't submit the main URL of your site if you intend to place the code elsewhere. If you submit the main URL, place the code there. If you already have a page established for displaying rings, ensure that URL is submitted.

Reason: Because of the system Navigation/ Ring Checker. If it cannot find the code, your site will FAIL the checker test and may be suspended.

  • Ensure your ring page links to the main URL
If you are placing the rings on the main URL, disregard this. But if you are using a separate rings page, ensure that it links to and is linked from your main URL.

Reason. By making sure your main URL is linked from the ring page, you ensure that visitors can find your site when entering via a ring. By linking back, it assures that they can find their way out when done. Don't think visitors can or will try to guess any URL within your site! - Also, in the WebRing system - Pass-L sites are required to have a Visible WEBRING link on the main page.

  • You must display the code
Submitting to a ring does not end your work. If you take the time to submit your site, the manager will be looking for you to post the code as quickly as possible - In any of the Schoolhouse Webrings, your site will not be approved for membership until the code is in place on your registered URL.

Reason: The code is what keeps the ring together and allows visitors to navigate from one site to the next, eventually getting to yours. If you don't post the code, it may cause your site to be suspended or even deleted from the ring because you have broken the chain. The code must remain in place for the duration of your membership.

  • You must keep your membership information updated.
If your site moves or the ring code is moved, you must edit the URL to reflect the new location of the code.

Reason: To meet the 3 expectations outlined above. Be sure to keep your title, description, & email current, too. Keeping things updated makes your site that much more attractive and the RM must be able to contact you. If you want to be informed about the any changes or problems concerning your membership - email addresses must be current.

  • Read & Understand Individual Ring Standards.
Each ring is owned/operated with different requirements for membership within the ring. Some have High Standards requiring only certain content. Other rings are more flexible. It will save you headaches in the long run to make sure your site fits the ring you want to join.

Reason: Every one of the individual Schoolhouse Webrings' join pages explicitly cite that Ring's criteria for eligibility in accepting New Members. Sites not meeting the stated standards for the ring will not be accepted or will be removed if the site is found to not meet those standards at a later date.

  • Ring Graphics
This expectation is primarily focused on members in any of the Schoolhouse Webrings hosted by the RingSurf system. The Ring's Logo must be downloaded from the ring's home/code page and uploaded to your site's server in the same directory as the web page containing the ring's code. Failure to maintain visible ring graphics and/or linking will result in member removal, suspension, or possible deletion from the ring.

Reason: To link to graphics on this server is BANDWIDTH STEALING. Literally hundreds of sites are members in the the collective Schoolhouse Webrings. This server cannot serve graphics to all of those sites countless times per day without becoming crippled by the load and shutting down. Therefore, members are required at all times to maintain the graphics on their own site. Webring Hosted Ring Logos are not an issue due to WebRing's expanded hosting of ring graphics.

General Ring Terminology
The terms listed below are globally used to denote actions or constructs
of both the NetRing (RS) or Webring (WR) hosted systems.

ACTIVE
The preferred status of a membership as it's listed the ring's Index (RS) or Hub page (WR) and accessible to visitors.

FAIL
Test result from the ring navigation checker indicating no code or a problem with the code

HTML
HyperText Markup Language (computer language used to created web pages) -
For those who cannot or will not  use the SSNB (WR) , there is individual HTML code for each WebRing available - providing the Ring Master allows HTML ring codes. It does take up more space on the HTML source of the page and requires installation for each new Ring you join.

NAVIGABILITY - Navigation
The ability to travel from a point in the ring, through all member sites and arrive back at the starting point.

NAVIGATION or RING CHECKER
The software used to test sites for proper code placement. Has an accuracy rate of almost 99%.

NEXT
Ring navigation command that allows visitors to move from the current site to the one that follows it in the list.

NEXT FIVE
Ring navigation command that allows visitors to view the site list starting with the group of sites (up to ten) that follows the current site.

PREVIOUS
Ring navigation command that allows visitors to move from the current site to the one that precedes it in the list.

PREVIOUS FIVE
Ring navigation command that allows visitors to view the site list starting with the group of sites (up to ten) that precedes the current site.

RANDOM
Ring navigation command that allows visitors to move from the current site to a randomly selected site in the Ring.

NEXT
Ring navigation command that allows visitors to move from the current site to the one that follows it in the list.

RING ID
The 16-character, or less, alphanumeric identifier of a ring. It distinguishes each ring in the system.

RING LOGO
An image which is uploaded or linked to for display on the Ring's Hub page. If uploaded, the graphic cannot exceed a file size of 25K.

RING MANAGER, RING MASTER, RING MISTRESS - RM
A person who displays a mastery of the RingSurf or WebRing system to the point where they can successfully maintain a Ring and assist members. This person is responsible for the daily operations of their Ring.

SITE ID#
The numeric identifier of a membership. It distinguishes each site in the ring. When a site applies to a ring, it is assigned the lowest unused number.

SKIP
Ring navigation command that allows visitors to move from the current site to the one that is either two ahead or behind (depending whether it is used with "next" or "previous") in the list. It's existence is to bypass a site that is missing the code, will not load, or does not exist.

QUEUE
Holding place for ring applicants (pending) or suspended members - These sites are not listed on the Ring's Index or Hub pages and they are not ACTIVE in the ring.

WebRing Terminology
The terms listed below are used specifically to
denote actions or constructs in the Webring (WR) hosted system.

HUB, Ring Hub  (WR) - The main list of member sites, which also contains the all needed links for ring management (when manager is properly logged in), plus the JOIN button for new members. The basic construction is:
http://*.webring.com/hub?ring=RINGID
where "*" is replaced with the server letter (if trying to construct the hub URL yourself, you can use any letter) and RINGID is the ring's ID.

JAVASCRIPT
The language of the SSNB

LOGIN ID, USER ID, WEBRING ID
The ID you created in the WebRing system which you log into the system in order to access your rings and memberships.

MY RINGS
Page in users account that shows Rings managed, if any. Can be found at http://i.webring.com/mbr?p=mr

VIEW RING SITES
Page in users account that shows Ring memberships, if any. Can be found at http://i.webring.com/mbr?p=ms

VIEW WEB SITES
Page in users account that shows what URLs are registered with WebRing, if any. Can be found at http://i.webring.com/mbr?p=mu

NAVBAR
Short for "Navigation Bar", which is the latter half of the acronym SSNB, it's generally referred to as what you use to navigate a ring. A NavBar contains all the navigation commands (such as "next" and "random") you need to get around the ring. Several NavBars make up the stack.

NAVBAR LOGO
An image which is uploaded or linked to for display on the Ring's navbar. If uploaded, the graphic cannot exceed a file size of 25K. In the default navbar, it will appear as a 50x50 pixel image.

NAVIGATION RATING
A number between 1 and 100, located on the ring hub page, which indicates how navigable a ring is. It is a calculated ratio between the number of active sites which PASS the checker and FAIL. Higher numbers indicate easier-to-navigate ring.

NAVIGATION WIZARD
WebRing program that intelligently helps you install coding and determines if installed coding will work with a specified membership.

PASS
Test result from the navigation checker indicating the code is properly installed on the registered URL

PASS-L
Test result from the navigation checker indicating the code is properly installed on a WebRings page which is properly linked from the registered URL.

PENDING
Status of a new site, not yet reviewed by the manager. There is nothing the member can do to change this status. Once the membership is reviewed by the manager it will either be approved (and possibly suspended) or denied.

SCORE
Used in webring search results, it relates to the site's relevance to the keywords submitted for that search - Term is also used to depict ratings WebRing members receive for their management experience for purpose of adopting rings.

SITE MANAGEMENT SCREEN
Also called the edit screen, it allows you to change the title, URL, and description of your site, as well as transfer it to a new ID, contact the manager, obtain the navbar code, or delete the membership.

SSNB
Server-Side Navigation Bar. The JavaScript snippet which creates the webring stack for your registered URL. You need only install one of these per unique URL submitted to WebRings - Unless you split stacks. All memberships associated with that URL will display "stacked" on it. Because NavBars are constructed and stored on WebRing's server, this type of code uses very little of your file space.

STACK
The group of ring memberships visible after installing the SSNB. When displayed, they "stack" one atop another neatly

SUSPENDED
Status of a site usually seen because it FAILs the checker test. Prior to yelling at the ring manager, TEST your site, it may not have been tested properly by the system.

U#
The 8 to 17 digit number which is used within the SSNB to create your ring stack
