Lesson 4: China on a Globe
Duration: 2 Days

Overview/Purpose: To familiarize students with China's location and some of its major geographic and political features using a globe.

Goals: Through selected learning materials, students will:

  1. Explore and understand the physical and political geography of China.

  2. Illustrate their mastery of the geographical concepts of absolute location, relative location, latitude, and hemispheres.

  3. Improve academic understanding/performance through cooperative learning groups.

Objectives: As a result of this lesson, students will:

  1. Understand the difference between a city, country, continent, and regions and use these terms to label specific places on earth.
  2. Identify and name land forms and water forms on a globe/map of China.

Procedure/Activity:
Day 1:

  1. After daily brainstarter and attendance, Introduction to Lesson. Pass out work sheets.
    Today, we begin our in depth look at China. Most of you have noticed that may globes have appeared in the room. We will be using them to explore some interesting geographical features of China. However, these globes are not up-to-date. Can anyone tell me what recent changes have occurred in the countries' political boundaries bordering China which might not be reflected on these old globes? (At this point, if no one answers or answers are not complete, teacher will provide answer.) Answers will be written on chalkboard.
  2. Students will then be assigned groups of three, by seating, to use globes.
  3. Gloves are to be used to answer worksheet questions, however, the textbook, atlas, and wall maps may also be used.
  4. The remaining class period will be used to complete the worksheet.

Day 2:

1. After daily Brainstarter and attendance, the class will be asked how many need to finish their globe worksheets. The reason for this open choice is to make allowances for the broad range of student abilities on this team of students -- (Special Needs to Gifted) --Depending on answer:
A. The class will either have the rest of the class period to finish the worksheets and students who are finished may go to the library to do research on extra-credit opportunities.
B. A class review and peer grading on the globe packet.

Materials:
At least 10 globes and atlases, textbooks, and wall maps should be available for additional resources.
China on the Globe worksheet.

Assessment: Students will be graded according to answer key for completion and accuracy of responses. (20pts)

Problems Noted: Special Ed students will have benefit of peer tutoring. Absences will complete packet using textbook and available atlases.
