Curriculum Unit: East Asia
Lesson 2: Map Labeling
Duration: 2 days

Overview/Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to introduce students to the physical geography of East Asia.

Goals: Through selected learning materials, students will:

  1. Explore the physical geography of selected regions.

  2. Identify and locate selected physical features of a region or place on a map or globe.

Objectives: As a result of this lesson, students will:

  1. Use basic geographic terms to describe the physical characteristics of the earth.
  2. Identify and name land forms and water forms on a map.

Procedure/Activity:
Day 1:

  1. After daily brainstarter and attendance, a review will be conducted on Ch. 30 review questions assigned as homework. Answers will be given to the questions and students will have an opportunity to voice their own questions. Homework will be collected to grade for completion.
    Transition: Students will be told to clear desks and the map activity will be passed out.
  2. A map of Asia will be displayed on the overhead and the major geographical features listed on worksheet will be pointed out and described by the teacher.
  3. The remaining class period will be used for students to work independently on their own maps. A list of geographical features is provided. Students are to locate the listed names on the map and label the correct area on their own map. Students may use the overhead, textbook, atlas, or globe as resources for identifying locations. coloring of maps is recommended but not necessary.

Day 2:

  1. After daily brainstarter and attendance, students will be given the opportunity of completing their maps in class.
  2. Students already finished with their maps may use their time to go to the library to do research for extra credit on Asian Culture.
  3. Students not completing their maps in class will be required to complete them as homework. Due the next day at the beginning of class.

Materials:
Overhead projector, Map of Asia
Map Worksheets
Markers, colored pencils (optional)

Assessment: Completed maps will be collected and graded for accuracy according to Key. A Map Quiz will be given on Monday of the following (allowing time for worksheets to be graded and returned) to assess students knowledge of physical features of Asia.
