Welcome to my little (Lil) school house! I am a "schoolmarm" who lives in a small town located in Washington state. For those that may not know, the name "Schoolmarm" is a colloquial term often applied to school teachers living west of the Mississippi in the 1800's. Since I teach Social Studies and my favorite subject is History, the name has a certain appeal to me. It is my hope that I will be able to combine educational elements of the past, present, and perhaps even the future of education within these pages creating a broad educational resource for my visitors and students.

Typically, in centuries past, a schoolmarm would teach all grade-levels within their one room schoolhouse. In addition, the school house was the focal center of the community, often doubling as a Church meeting-house on Sunday (Interestingly, this practice of Church organizations utilizing school facilities still continues today.) Nonetheless, times change and schools have gotten much larger with students grouped by grade-level. The modern age even allows for students to attend classes in alternative settings such as on the Internet. This site, or rather this schoolhouse, is representative of a bygone era but with a contemporary method for offering educational opportunities and resources for all grade levels.

The major points of interest of this site are listed below. You will find that this schoolhouse, like any classroom or home, reflects the personality of its primary occupant. Therefore, in addition to academic resources in a variety of formats, I have also included many of my personal interests. For the most recent additions, changes, & news about the Schoolhouse, be sure to visit my office page for the latest Scoop. (Linked Above).

The Library
An interesting collection of articles categorized according to type.

  • The Schoolhouse Scribbles section will contain a collection of writings on a variety of subjects. This section is still under construction.
  • Educating Ideas From The Past - is an interesting collection of actual teaching methods (pedagogy), lesson tips, and general advice for educators from simpler times. The antiquated teaching methods and suggestions offered on these pages are approximately 100 years out-of-date and do not necessarily reflect the beliefs or teaching practices of Schoolmarm. The pages contained within this bookshelf site are offered for entertainment/research purposes only. Nevertheless, you may just find that much of the advice here is presented in a down-to-earth and practical manner which is rather refreshing.
  • Historical Documents - just as the name describes. This area contains a growing collection of important primary source documents of history.

Downloads

  • Bytes O' History - Previously all downloads available were located in the Bytes O' History Castle. This sub site of the Schoolhouse has been dismantled and the treasure of history related games & programs has been moved here.
  • PC Utilities - A section with a few really useful and recommended programs I recommend.
  • Enigma Mods - This section contains a few code modifications I wrote for the same CMS system this site uses.

My Teaching Portfolio
This is an online-version of my professional teaching portfolio constructed during the student teaching phase of my education. This publication represents one method for organizing a professional portfolio according to specific state standards and may be useful as an example for other student teachers. Philosophies of Education, Lesson Plans: including units & projects, and classroom management practices are illustrated and discussed.

Resource Links
The Academic Resource Network and the Bits O' History Library have been combined into a more efficient directory of Internet sites featuring education resources for school teachers, educators, students, parents, home school families, Sunday school teachers, & more. Students of history will be particularly interested in the Bits O' History category. Many primary source documents and documented secondary sources offer factual information for term papers and research projects.

My Exceptional Child
A website designed to tell the story of my little boy who has c-ACC (Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum) and our parental struggle in understanding, coping, and finally accepting the challenges of raising a disabled child. Includes: ACC research & teaching strategies, special education helps, & a collection of letters and stories concerning exceptional children.

Friends of Schoolmarm
Would you like to add-a-link from your site to this one and be my friend? Or, if you would prefer to just browse over some great educational sites, that is okay too. Either way, you should have a look here.

Schoolhouse Playground
Every good teacher knows that hard-working students of all ages need a little recess now and then. This is my Internet version of a playground and it is the place to find some of the best games around! I offer many different types of games right here on the site and you can find out about my PowerPets & Neopets too. Take a peek, I don't think you will be disappointed.

Web Rings

  • WebRings I Manage - A Web Ring is a system of linked sites usually with a unifying theme. I manage nearly a dozen rings with themes of interest to me. Such as: Education, Special Education, History, Disabilities, & Christian Women.
  • Net / Web Ring Help - This guide began its purpose for those members or prospective members of any of the Schoolhouse Webrings that are unfamiliar with HTML editing. Since then, the guide has developed into a comprehensive site explaining just about everything concerning ring membership. All members of the rings I manage are always directed here first for answers to common ring-related questions.
  • This site is a member of ... - Naturally, the schoolhouse belongs to many varied rings managed by others. Be sure to check them out or use these links to jump back on the ring which brought you here.
